Red Scarf Project 
You're invited to “Get Involved” in the Red Scarf Project 2011. This project is spearheaded by the Orphan Foundation of America to provide Valentine's Day care packages to young adults who have “aged out” of the foster care system and are enrolled in college or trade school.
KnittingFever.com, a distributor of fine yarns, has generously donated 400 skeins of several colors of red Amity by ella rae for this project. Amity is a soft, washable worsted yarn comprised of 75% acrylic and 25% wool. It is available at the shop for $5.75/skein. When you purchase the yarn, you will receive a voucher for a refund of the complete purchase price when you return the finished scarf to the shop. The deadline is December 15, 2010. The voucher will be valid until February 14, 2011, for any regularly priced yarn in the shop. You get to choose the pattern for the scarf, so don’t limit yourself to just one scarf! Listed below are some possible selections. We have care cards so you can write a note of encouragement to include with your scarf.
If you don’t complete your scarf or simply wish to purchase some of this lovely yarn for a personal project, all the funds from the sale of this yarn will be used to purchase gift cards and other care package components that typically are included with the scarves.
Requirements for making an OFA Red Scarf
Style: Think unisex collegiate. The scarves go to both male and female students, so they shouldn’t be gender specific. Fringes are optional.
Yarn: Preferably DK, double fingering-weight, worsted weight, or light bulky yarns. No lace weight, super-chunky, or mohair yarns, as there are many people who find mohair too itchy. The yarn should be soft and washable.
Color: Red! However, this could mean burgundy, cherry, russet, red stripes with other colors, or multicolor hues including red.
Finished and tagged: Yarn ends should be securely sewn in. For a personal touch, attach a tag saying “Handmade for You” with your first name, city, and group affiliation, if any. We also suggest that you include washing instructions and personal messages of encouragement.
